Chapter 7 â Stella
The instant Stella saw those cameras staring at her and Jim, she knew everything that had been perfect had gone wrong in a split second. Jim had kissed her right there, in front of everyone, in front of anyone tuned in to watch the live broadcast. Her face had been shown to thousands of peopleâat least one of which would, inevitably, be one of her father's men.
She'd sidestepped them for weeks now, but just like that, she was on the run again. Now that her location had been broadcasted for everyone to see, she couldn't stay here with Jim anymore. If they hadn't been in danger because of her before, they definitely were now. Tears stung her eyes as she ran down streets and through alleys, trying to get as far as possible from the tournament as possible.
She'd only been married to Jim for a few short days, and every single moment of those few days had been amazing. She should have known better: it was all too good to last. In the end, her father would ruin everything good in her life until he was put away for good. She couldn't be the one to put Jim's life on the line because of her decisions, no matter how much it hurt to leave him.
Famine ran behind her, keeping up while shouting at her to try and get her attention. She heard him, but didn't process any of what he said. Stella was far too caught up in her own thoughts.
Why had she been so stupid?
If only she hadn't been so afraid to tell Jim the truth about why she was here. She knew she could trust him, knew that he would have been understanding and supportive ... he would have found a way to protect her. But she'd been afraid to ruin what goodness they shared with the fear that her father might bring to their relationship. Stella hadn't wanted to expose Jim to any of that, and now she was paying the price.
She either ran, or she stayed and got caught, getting Jim hurt in the aftermath.
Jim was hurt no matter which way she did this.
As she ran, she imagined his arms around her, holding her close and telling her everything would be okay. She imagined their mouths pressed together in an intimate kiss, one of burning passion and gentle love. She imagined his hands on her ass, the promise that she'd made to himâthat he could have as much of her as he wanted once he became champion.
Now he was champion, but he'd lost her instead.
Her thoughts were interrupted by her phone buzzing. She checked it, even though she knew who it would be already: Jim.
She declined the call, wiped tears from her face, and kept running. She must have run for hours, declining his calls and ignoring his texts before she finally didn't have the strength to run anymore. She'd found a gravel trail through a local park, but she didn't know where she was anymore, or how far she'd gone from the tournament.
